We Were Strangers in a Strange Land: Part 1 (Nov 12) and Part 2 (Nov 19) with Rabbi Bearman
Join Rabbi Bearman as we explore the historical records of Jewish immigrants in America and learn how Jews were welcomed (or not) to this continent. We'll study the three main waves of Jewish immigration, the settlement patterns of these new arrivals, and the ways that different groups of Jewish immigrants interacted with one another. We can learn so much about how we want to act in the future by studying the stories of our people's past!

Everyday Wisdom: Lessons from Proverbs and Pirkei Avot for our Daily Lives with Rabbi Levine
Jewish wisdom literature has existed for thousands of years, but so many of the texts feel as if they could have been written yesterday. From advice on business ethics and self-care to how we treat each other and how to parent, these texts are supposed to show us the path to a more meaningful life. Join Rabbi Levine as we explore excerpts from the Book of Proverbs and Pirkei Avot to find the lessons that speak to us today in an ever-changing world.

Tuesday, December 10 and December 17, 2024
Fact-Checking the Story of Chanukah, Then and Now: Part 1 (Dec. 10) and Part 2 (Dec. 17) with Rabbi Bennett

The ancient and beloved story of Chanukah celebrates the second-century CE Jewish warriors known as the Maccabees. According to legend, the Maccabees rejected assimilation and defeated the Assyrian army, rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem, rekindled the menorah, and then, a great miracle happened there - The oil lasted for eight nights rather than one! In Part 1 of this class, we will explore, unpack and “fact-check” this ancient Chanukah story.  In Part 2, we will apply the Chanukah story to current day events in Israel, America, and the rest of the Jewish world, asking the question: “Who are the true Maccabees today?”
